
The Hockey for Hope Tournament is intended to reflect the mission statement of the Kitchener-Waterloo Women's Recreational Hockey League (KWWRHL). The goal of the tournament is two fold. First and foremost to promote opportunities for women to come together and celebrate women’s ice hockey as a recreational sport with a focus on the spirit of fellowship and fair play. The second goal of the tournament is to give back to the community by raising funds for a variety of community organizations.
Key Timelines:
- April 2003:
A tournament committee was struck to coordinate the first Kitchener-Waterloo
Women's Recreational Hockey League (KWWRHL) Tournament.
- December 2003:
The first annual tournament is held bringing together over 250 players.
- December 2004:
The second annual tournament is held bringing together teams from all over
Ontario.
- August 2005 - Present: The planning gets underway for the 2005 tournament. The KWWRHL tournament is renamed to “Hockey for Hope” and a logo is developed to help with creating an identity for the tournament. The goal of this year’s tournament is to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. From this year forward, a different community organization will be chosen and the tournament will be used to raise money for that cause. The majority of funds raised will go that organization.
